Chennai, the hub of automobile and engineering manufacturing in India, houses close to a lakh small business enterprises whose business activities account for a major part of the state revenue. Also known as the Detroit of India, Chennai produces more than 40 per cent of the auto parts and motor vehicles in India. Other key industries in the district are foundry and textiles. With nearly seven lakhs people engaged in various industries, there is an appreciable increase in the number of new units registering in the Chennai cluster.
