There are just 30 units that manufacture psyllium seed husk in this industry, which employs about 400 workers. In spite of its small size, the collective annual turnover of the industry is around Rs. 23 crore.
“We export psyllium husk, capsules and powder to various countries such as USA, UK, UAE, France, Spain, Germany, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Japan and Korea, among others,” said Chaman Kumar, a manufacturer.
“Most of us do not understand the importance of building a brand image. Industrialists do not advertise their products to promote their brand names. They do not make efforts to convince domestic and international consumers to buy their products,” he said.
“The manufacturers do not even use developed technology, and have poor networking with traders. They do not hire skilled workers, and the working conditions in the industry are also not very supportive,” stated Sujhan Kumar, another manufacturer.
“There should be training programmes and campaigns that guide the industrialists in the adoption of modern technology and establishing their brand image, he said.
