According to official sources, there are over 500 units in the industry, where about 5,000 people work. This footwear industry, which is popular largely for sandals and floaters, earns a collective annual turnover of over Rs. 85 crore.
“This is a huge industry, which has now emerged as one of the major hubs in the state. We keep guiding our workers, to bring out the best in them. The workers here make different designs of footwear, ” said Saarth Kapoor, one of the manufacturers.
“Not only local traders, but traders from all parts of the country come here to buy footwear and sell them in their own areas, at higher prices. Many tourists also like to buy this footwear,” he said.
“We use the finest quality of leather in our products, but have to face various problems that hamper our work. The Municipal Corporation stops us from draining water after washing leather. There should more Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETP) in the area,” stated Sangidh Kumar, another manufacturer.
