Power demand peaks in New Delhi

The ever-rising blistering heat in the capital pushed the power demand to an unprecedented high of 5,155 megawatts (MW) on May 30, breaking all previous records in Delhi's power consumption. "Delhi's power demand has touched 5,155MW on May 30, which is the highest ever demand," said a power department official.

The power consumption exceeded the highest-ever demand of 5,032MW recorded on May 25, 2012.

In August 2011, the capital had registered the highest-ever demand of 5,028MW.

In 2012, the projected consumption of power has been pegged at 5,500MW.

Over the past 12 years, the demand for electricity in the capital has shown an upward trend.

The peak demand for power reached 2,831MW in 2001 and has continued to increase ever since.

While power distribution company BSES Yamuna Power reported the season's highest power demand of 2,037MW in its area, BSES Rajdhani Power reported its highest ever power demand, which touched 1,363MW.
