OyeChotu: A unique food delivery concept

OyeChotu.com is an e-commerce portal for NRIs to order and request delivery of unique kinds of foods from India that are mostly not available in their authentic form abroad. Ahmedabad-based OyeChotu.com was conceived of and brought to life by Ruchita Desai.

When was OyeChotu launched?

In January 2012.

What is your background?

I have a background in developing new products and proposals in the telecom industry. I worked in developing and marketing new ideas and products in the mobile space for the last nine years, in India and abroad.

How did OyeChotu come about?

During my travels abroad for work, I noticed that while Indians live across the globe, the availability of good Indian food in most places is limited. The vegetarians especially are put to a lot of trouble because of this, and are sometimes deterred them from living and working at such locations. To encourage and support such ambitious Indians, I thought of starting OyeChotu.

Tell us about the kinds of products that you offer...

The products offered on OyeChotu broadly fall under the categories of namkeen, sweets, snacks, chutneys, special masala, syrups and ready-to-eEat. We offer doorstep delivery of these products to customers at a price that one would find in India.

To which countries do you offer delivery services of snacks?

UK, USA, Canada, all UAE countries, France, Germany, Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Finland, South Africa, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong and China.

Tell us about the online food ordering service that you have for the citizens of Ahmedabad...

The citizens of Ahmedabad can view the menus of nearby eateries on our portal, and can order online. They can choose to pay by cash or card. Also, we offer them a wide choice of eateries so that they can easily select the one they want in terms of cuisine, price and items.

How big is your team?

Presently, eight people.

What are the major challenges that you face?

It is a challenge to convince customers of the quality of our service and products. It is difficult to establish the customers’ trust on us. However, we have seen that once a person has ordered from OyeChotu, he/she becomes a loyal customer.

How did you arrange for the initial investment for OyeChotu?

I self-funded the business. The primary investment was in building the website. Other recurring expenses are managed through a thorough cash flow.

What are your expansion plans?

We plan to extend similar services throughout India.

How do you get your customers? Do you advertise?

We do not use traditional advertising, but use online marketing and social media to reach out to our customers.

Tell us about the social responsibility programs that Oye Chotu undertakes...

OyeChotu is currently the official snacks partner of De Paix Yatra 2012. This yatra is being undertaken by two young individuals from Mumbai to London by bike, to promote peace and youth progression. During the yatra, these individuals will be interviewing unsung heroes across seven countries and 500 cities. OyeChotu will deliver Indian snacks to them throughout the journey, as they are vegetarians, to ensure that their energy levels are always high.

OyeChotu also shares one percent of profit with Andhajan Jyot in Ahmedabad, which is an orphanage for the blind.

What advice would you give to a potential entrepreneur?

A good idea will always have customers. Be creative in spotting who your customers are, and find new ways to reach out to them.

What are the major trends that you see evolving in the food industry in India of late?

New food types and new innovation is taking over. Seven flavours of pani poori, pizza made from chocolate, Lebanese cuisine in a city like Ahmedabad, khakras made from dosas...such uncommon stuff is getting popular.

How do you think the industry will grow in the near future?

The food industry will flourish in metros, as purchasing power there will increase, and will counter the rising food inflation and rising selling prices at eateries. Eateries will be able to experiment with new food types such as sushi, etc. However, in Tier-2 cities, food eatery owners will not be able to increase prices even if food inflation and other overheads are on high. Thus, innovation will be more visible in Tier-1 city eateries, while eateries in Tier-2 cities and those below will have to largely rely on traditional types of food.
