Since when has Millers 46 been in operation?
Millers 46 has been in operation since April 2003.
What were you doing prior to starting the restaurant?
I am basically an MBA from Sydney. Before starting Millers 46, I worked with various hotels such as The Sheraton, Holiday Inn, Crown Plaza and Intercontinental Hotels.
How did the idea of starting Millers 46 come about?
I wanted to offer the city of Bangalore something that did not exist at the time Millers 46 was launched. At that time, a few restaurants did serve steaks, but none focused solely on it – including the decor.
Which are your most popular dishes?
Our Texas T-Bone Steak is the most popular.
What are the recent trends that you are noticing in the eating-out habits of the Bangaloreans?
Bangalore has, over time, moved away from the ‘multi-cuisine’ format, and is moving towards outlets serving a specific cuisine, with a specific décor and experience.
How big is your team at the moment?
We have a team of 40 at present. What are the major challenges that you face? It is always a challenge to obtain skilled and efficient labour. Apart from that, legal procedures and licensing are a big hassle. Then, there is the challenge of always maintaining standards in the face of business competition, labour turnover and rising input costs.
How do you cope with competition from other restaurants?
We focus on our core competencies and strive to centre our attention on what we do best.
What have been your proudest moments as an entrepreneur?
I always feel proud whenever I see a guest leaving my restaurant happy and satisfied. It makes me happy to know that we have managed to survive in an ever-challenging environment for nearly 10 years.
What are your expansion plans in the near future?
I am working on a retail project that is partially associated with the current theme of Millers 46. It is a surprise!
What advice would you give to an aspiring entrepreneur?
As far as entrepreneurship goes, I have always followed a certain quote by an anonymous person: ‘Entrepreneurship is living a few years of your life like most people will not, so you can spend the rest of your life like most people can not.’
I would advise potential entrepreneurs to put in their best in their venture in the initial phases, so that they can sit back and reap the fruits of their hard work later.
