There has been a considerable increase in the number of tourists visiting Kerala from Russia and China in the last couple of years. In the year 2011, a 24 percent increase was noted in the number of visas issued through the Indian embassy in Russia.
Nearly 12,000 tourists from Russia visited Kerala in the year 2011, while nearly 10,000 visited in 2010, stated Ratheesh C Nair, Honorary Consul of Russia in Thiruvananthapuram. Most of these tourists were lured by the beautiful beaches of Kerala, its natural greenery and the Ayurveda that is prevalant in the state.
The Tourism Department of Kerala is considering exploring the markets of Russia and China for new tourism opportunities. Apart from this, the department is also planning to look out for opportunities in Australia, Malaysia and the Middle East.
Several road shows have been planned in these countries, to make people more aware of Kerala as a tourist destination. Rani George, Director of Tourism, confirmed this, stating that the language barriers in communicating with consumers in these countries will soon be taken care of.
