Indian SMEs can now look into exporting footwear as well as other leather products to China, and also to bag more orders from other markets like Europe and US.

This opportunity emerged during the International Leather Goods Fair (ILGF) held at Kolkata from February 18-22. The fair, which received participation from 22 leather product manufacturers across India, provided a boost to small leather exporters in the face of weak demand from domestic markets as well as prime export hubs. Several exhibitors received enquiries from potential clients, many of which have a strong possibility of translating into orders.

Experts have concluded that India’s leather product manufacturers need to consider new markets, so as to reduce dependence on select territories. Apart from China, Japan and Australia are good potential markets.
