India preferred medical tourism destination for Omanis

India is fast becoming a preferred destination for medical tourism by Omanis, reports Business Standard. During the period from January 1 to June 30, 2012, the number of medical visas issued to Oman residents by India has gone up by three times, as compared to the same period in 2011.

"There was a tremendous increase in the number of all kinds of visas issued to Omanis during the first half of 2012,” an official from the Indian embassy in Muscat stated.

“Statistics reveal that India is turning into a prime destination for Omanis who opt for advanced treatment and also want to have a glimpse of the rich Indian cultural heritage," he stated.

Sources in Oman state that visa enquiries for treatment in India are further on the rise.

The tremendous development of medical facilities in India as well as the availability of experienced doctors, affordable and quality nursing and the comparatively low cost of medicines are the major reasons behind this growth in medical tourism. Also, the processing of documents for Omanis travelling to India for medical purposes is much faster and easier as compared to other countries.

In addition, the cultural similarities between Oman and India make the country a favoured destination.

Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Maharashtra and New Delhi have been noted to be the most favoured destinations by Omanis in India for medical tourism during January-June 2012.
