In conversation with S Vaithiyanathan, Chennai Tooling

In an exclusive interview with SupportBiz, S Vaithiyanathan, Managing Director of Chennai Tooling, tells us about the challenges of being a small business. The company started operations in the year 2006.

Chennai Tooling is a Chennai-based small-scale unit that is into the production of machine spares and component parts.

How long has Chennai Tooling been in business?

Chennai Tooling has been operational since 2006. It has been in business for 6 years now.

How big is your organisation?

We employ a staff of three people, presently.

What are the kinds of products that you manufacture?

We mainly produce press tools, moulds for plastic industries, jigs, fixtures, perishable tools, machine spares, components, prototype jobs and special purpose machining jobs based on drawings.

What are the major challenges that you face, as a small-scale manufacturer?

I would say obtaining finance and good manpower are our biggest challenges. Apart from that, we face the challenge of getting accepted by our customers – it is difficult to convince the customers of our strengths, being a small-scale unit. We also have a limited reach to customers.

We are unable to indulge in the mass production that larger businesses are able to do, and that is a hindrance to us. We work on conventional machinery, but we believe in our manpower and skill sets.

How do you cope with the competition from larger manufacturers in your field of work?

We rely on our engineering strengths, and try to give our customers the best quality of products. That is our USP, and that is how we deal with competition.

Why did you choose Chennai as your base of operations?

Chennai was a known market to us, and we were aware of the market potential in this city. Hence, we started operations in Chennai.

The production of spares and components requires huge investment in machinery. How did you go about arranging for the same?

It was indeed an uphill task to arrange for finance to start this venture. However, we are now managing with internal funds. That said, we do have plans to scale up to the next level, for which we are putting strategies in place.
