Surat, December 16: The Surat Diamond Association (SDA) has urged Rupa Dutta, economic advisor to the department of commerce to help speed up the setting up of Common Facility Centres (CFCs) in Gujarat.
According to Industry sources, diamond manufacturers in centres other than Surat are lagging behind in terms of processing diamonds using hi-tech technology. This is because they are not able to invest in hi-tech techniques due to lack of funds.
In the 12th Five Year Plan the Central Government sanctioned Rs.50 crore for setting up of CFCs in various cities of Gujrat like Surat, Navsari, Ahmedabad, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Botad, Visnagar, Junagadh, Jasdan, Deesa to facilitate the use of modern technology equipments for small and medium diamond manufacturers.
The big diamond units are able to invest heavily in latest technology to increase their yields and to manufacture better quality diamonds and jewellery but, the small units are not able to do so due to limited resources.
The Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) and the Indian Diamond Institute (IDI) have still not finalized an agency to set up Common Facility Centres (CFCs) in Surat and 12 other diamond-producing places in Gujarat. Though the action to prepare a detailed report (DPR) for setting up of CFCs in 13 cities across the state was taken in April itself but the work is still pending as reported in The Times of India.
