Industrial units in Coimbatore could shut shop on the 10th of February, in response to a call for a day’s strike and demonstration by several industry bodies. Together, they are demanding continuous and reliable power supply to the city’s industrial belts.
Power cuts in State capital Chennai typicaly last 1-hour, while day long (8-hour) power cuts in Coimbatore are adversely impacting the financial viability of many industrial units. A statement by the Coimbatore District All Industry/Trade Organisations says industries in Coimbatore have been facing issues with announced and unannounced power cuts on a regular basis, for years now. They have been affected to the extent of lakhs of workers losing their jobs.
Over 5000 units have downed shutters. -- 8-hour long power cuts have affected several factories; production has has slowed down, which has led to a loss of customers, according to the Hindu Business Line report.
This is not a new issue and the State government had promised to take corrective action within six months of assuming office. Their agitation is understandable and has started gaining significance.
