SupportBiz lists some tips to work well under pressure.
1. Make a list
When you have hundreds of things to do weighing on your mind, it is all too easy to feel overwhelmed and confused. To avoid this situation, make a list of all the things that you need to do, and then prioritise them according to their importance and urgency. This will serve as a task guide for you, and ease off your tension a bit.
2. Be focused
Intense pressure can cause one to lose concentration, and become unfocused in one’s work. Take a deep breath, and bring yourself to focus on the task at hand. You will be able to loosen some of the pressure on yourself once you get absorbed in a particular task at hand.
3. Take breaks
You might think that taking breaks when you have loads of things to do is an absurd idea, but it is not so. Take breaks periodically to rejuvenate yourself. Make use of your break time to meditate, take deep breaths, exercise, read something inspiring, or just talk to your colleagues. This will help you take your mind off work for a while, and you will be refreshed when you start work again.
4. Sleep well
When you are going through a particularly stressful period at work, ensure that you get a good night’s sleep. This will help you stay fresh and enthusiastic as you work, and help increase your productivity. Good sleep will also help you focus better on your work.
5. Ask for help
When you are feeling overwhelmed with scores of tasks to do, do not hesitate to ask for help. Reach out to your colleagues to help you with some of your chores. This will lighten your load, and help you focus better on the fewer tasks that you will have left to handle.
6. Get some air
Make sure that you get some fresh air in between work. Go out of your office, or stand in your balcony and let the fresh air hit you. This is sure to reinvigorate you.
7. Cut off
Learn to cut yourself off from work and all work-related communication as soon as you leave office. Spend the rest of your day with your family and/or friends, resting and pursuing your passions. Getting your mind off work this way will ensure that you are better equipped to face the next day better, even if it is going to be one full of pressure.
8. Adopt a graceful attitude
Adopt a graceful attitude towards work, and towards life in general. Do not let yourself get overly bogged down by the pressure at work. Stay positive, without giving in to negativity or anxiety. Give your best to your work, and stop worrying about factors that are not in your control.
9. Incorporate humour in your work day
You need humour in your life, especially when you are under a lot of pressure. Ensure that you have a bit of humour in your work day. Take a break to read something funny – it could be anything from a book to an e-mail forward. Crack jokes with your colleagues. Spend time with people who make you laugh.
10. Eat well
It is important to eat well in order to cope with pressure better. Ensure that you eat a well-balanced meal periodically. Eat healthy, and avoid junk food as far as possible. Avoid alcohol and taking too much of caffeinated drinks. Drink a lot of water, and keep yourself hydrated.
