Small to midsize processed food manufacturers should adhere to global standards set by IFS Food, particularly when they are eyeing exports to Europe and North America. Here is a list of micro-organisms / toxins tested for in ready-to-eat food.

International Featured Standards (IFS) Food is a ‘globally recognized standard for food safety;  logistics, household and personal care; broker; and cash-and carry/wholesale retail developed by the associated members of the German retail federation, hauptverband des Deutschen einzelhandels (hDe), and of its French counterpart, Fédérationdes entreprises du Commerce et de la Distribution (FCD), along with inputs from retailers in Italy, Switzerland, Poland, Spain, and Austria.’

- Food for infants and for special medical purposes: Criteria is food safety. Tested for Listeria monocytogenes (BAM/EN/ISO 11290‐1)

- Food able to support the growth of L. monocytogenes, other than those intended for infants and for special medical purposes: Criteria is food safety. Tested for Listeria monocytogenes (BAM/EN/ISO 11290‐2; and BAM/EN/ISO 11290‐1 before the food has left the immediate control of the food business operator, who has produced it)
