Private security agencies need skilled youth

The demand for skilled manpower at security agencies and private guards in the corporate sector is on the rise, an industry representative said in New Delhi on the sidelines of a conference. There are seven million private security guards in the country at present.

"There is a need of skilled youth in private security agencies. With the increase in multinational companies, the requirement of skilled private security guards has also risen in the past few years," said Vikram Singh, chairman of Central Association of Private Security Industry (CAPSI), a national body functioning as a federation for the security industry.

He was speaking at a two-day summit on 'Security Leadership' here, attended by over 400 representatives of private security agencies for discussions on strengthening the private security sector.

"The majority of security guards belong to villages and backward areas. Corporates are demanding skilled youth who are educated," said another representative of CAPSI.

Indian Police Service officer S.K. Pandey raised the issue of the safe use and condition of private security guards' arms. He said the companies which employed the guards should be responsible for looking after the weapons.

Another speaker at the summit said: "Private security guards are under paid and they are over-worked. Their wages must be reviewed."

As per CAPSI estimates, there are seven million private security guards in the country.
