Italian leather technology to come to India

The Indian leather industry is all set to get the benefit of technology from Italy, reports Fibre2fashion.com. The Council for Leather Exports (CLE) in India will soon meet with the Joint Secretary of the Commerce Ministry to discuss a proposal to set up a design studio in India in co-ordination with Italy.

The project is to be jointly executed by the CLE, the Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI), and the National Institute of Design (NID).

Following the meeting with the Joint Secretary, a delegation from India will visit Italy, to decide on further steps in the execution of the project. Executives from the CLE, FDDI and NID will comprise the delegation.

Sanjay Kumar, Regional Director (North) of the CLE, stated that the studio will be created at any of the NID centres in India.

The export competitiveness of India’s leather industry is expected to improve with the setting up of the design studio. India currently exports leather products worth USD4.6 billion annually.
