Low iron ore output to stall port, railway projects in Karnataka

A ban and now restrictions on iron-ore mining in Karnataka, in effect for more than a year, could halt the development of five infrastructure projects in that state, projects that would help transport and export iron ore from India, the third largest exporter of the commodity in 2011, according to an industry body.

Goa to cancel 40 mining leases

Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar stated in the monsoon session of the Goa legislative assembly that 40 mining leases, out of which around eight to 10 mines are operational, could be cancelled. Parrikar said that a decision on the mining leases would be taken soon, after following the process of natural justice and getting the opinion of the firm operating the mining lease on record.

Parrikar to cancel 40 illegal mining operations

Operations of 40 out of Goa's 100-odd mines which were running without clearances for the last few years will be cancelled soon, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said. Parrikar told the monsoon session of the Goa legislative assembly that the 40-plus mines were operating without the required documentation, and several mines had even been given dubious environment clearances by the union Ministry of Environment and Forests .

Goa puts freeze on number of iron ore-carrying barges

Heavy river traffic has forced inland marine authorities in Goa to put a temporary freeze on the number of barges plying the rivers, ferrying iron ore from mining jetties to transcontinental cargo ships. Speaking to reporters on July 5, James Braganza, the head of the Minor Ports Department in Goa, said that with nearly 300 barges plying the two major rivers - the Mandovi and the Zuari - the traffic along the waterways was getting congested.
