Pharmaceutical Manufactures’ Association of Tamil Nadu, formed nearly 28 years back, represents close to 450 licensed pharmaceutical manufacturers in the state of which over 150 are its active members. The industry has very few micro units and most of its members are medium level players. Although there are a few members engaged in both allopathic and ayurvedic drug manufacturing, the association mostly consists of allopathic manufactures.
The Tamil Nadu pharmaceutical industry employs nearly 50,000 people across the state and almost 95 per cent of the industry is located in and around Chennai, within the radius of 30-50 kilometers. The rest of the units are spread across Madurai, Coimbatore and Salem.
Pharmaceutical industry generates annual revenue of Rs 4000 cores inclusive of exports and domestic businesses. However, this is only about the formulating business and is exclusive of bulk drugs. There are only a few companies doing bulk drug business in the state. In its entirety, the Tamil Nadu pharmaceutical industry consisting both formulation and bulk drugs is worth one lakh cores rupees annually, generating Rs. 50,000 crores in exports and Rs. 50,000 from domestic sales.
The association is connected with the different federations including the South Indian Pharmaceutical Manufactures’ Association and also with the Confederation of Indian Pharmaceutical Industry.
