SupportBiz presents an exclusive conversation with Sushrut, co-founder of Hammer & Mop.
Tell us about the background of the founders...
I am an engineering dropout, having quit the course because I did not want to do it for the sake of doing it. I did my internship at BARC and with an internet entrepreneur.
Ashish is a dentist and a graphic designer, with experience as a freelancer.
Both of us are from the same college campus, and had worked on a few projects together before starting Hammer & Mop.
I presently handle operations, recruitment and business development, while he secures the legal, financial and design aspects.
How did Hammer & Mop come about?
Both Ashish and I wanted to start something of our own, and the idea of a doorstep cleaning service clicked when we saw dirty, dusty homes and busy people all around us. It was a need that we believed we could fulfill.
We also realised that people were ready to outsource their cleaning requirements, and decided to plunge into this field.
Which of your facilities can be of use to Indian SMEs?
For SMEs, our one-time or periodic clean-ups can be useful because they do not have to worry about more people stationed on the sites. Our teams clean and leave, and do a really good job.
What is your USP?
We offer premium services, in the sense that we are very thorough, use really good equipment, and are well behaved. We offer hassle-free services. That is what sets us apart.
Who are your target customers?
Busy working couples, professionals and business owners with no time to keep their homes clean, senior citizens and medical patients for whom a dust-free home is highly beneficial, families who would love a clean home before a major festival or when guests arrive, and offices that need a clean-up before esteemed clients arrive.
Where are your facilities available?
We currently operate only in Mumbai and are based in Bandra West, with a warehouse-cum-training center in Kalyan. We provide services across the city and the suburbs.
How big is your team?
About 10+ attendants and managers.
Tell us about the initial investment that was required....
We launched with a capital of INR50,000, which largely went into capital expenditure and salaries. Since both Ashish and I are first-timers, our friends and family pitched in with seed capital.
What is your business model?
Our customers give us a call or drop us an e-mail. We understand their requirements, book a clean-up appointment and send a team to the site. We get paid after the clean-up.
How do you get your clients?
Most of our business comes in through direct referrals from satisfied customers.
How do you cope with competition?
I think competition is healthy. We focus on our 'product', instead of what our competition is up to. That helps us give our best and gain customer satisfaction.
What are the major challenges that you face?
Managing employee and client expectations. We cope with that by focusing on building better relationships and being good human beings. It has helped us from the very start.
What are your expansion plans?
We plan to expand our footprint in Mumbai and expand to nearby cities in the next few years.
