India has set a target of 100 million metric tonnes for the production of wheat by the year 2020, reports Zee News India. The government had earlier determined that this target would be achieved by 2030, but has now brought down the timeframe.
Indu Sharma, Director of the Directorate of Wheat Research, stated that the target can be easily achieved, provided certain steps are taken by the government.
As a means to achieve the production target, the government is attempting to improve the irrigation network in North-east and Central India, and introduce measures like seed replacement programmes.
The government also plans to expand the area on which mechanized harvesting of wheat is carried out to over 10 million hectares from the three million hectares at present.
