Surat diamond industry labor yet to return from Diwali holiday

The world’s biggest diamond cutting and polishing hub in Surat reopened last Friday after a 25 day Diwali break.

Industry leaders informed that the labor returned in reduced numbers. They informed that they expect workers to return after December 1.

A times of India report said that although most units have opened in Varachha, Katargam and Mahidharpura, about 60 percent of the workers are yet to come back from their homes in Saurashtra. The reasons cited was the ongoing marriage season and therops following a good rainfall this season.

The whole industry will face a challenging December due to global concerns regarding synthetic diamonds emerging from India. Dinesh Navadia, president of Surat Diamond Association, while speaking to Times said, “Unscrupulous elements must understand that the entire industry's reputation is at stake. We can do nothing but spread awareness among diamantaires to check each and every parcel before buying."

Concerns went up when recently a few parcels from Mumbai were found out to be carrying huge quatities of synthetic lab-grown diamonds.
