Govt. to develop infrastructure for medical devices sector

The Union government is seeking to strengthen infrastructure of the medical devices industry at the onset of the implementation of Drugs and Cosmetics (Amendment) Bill, 2013 to the sector, reports Business Line.

The Bill has already been forwarded to the Parliamentary Standing Committee after putting at the Rajya Sabha.

S. Eswara Reddy, Deputy Drugs Controller of India, said at Medtec India 2013 in Mumbai that, the Bill will allow the Central Drugs Authority (CDA) to regulate the drugs and cosmetics sector, along with rejuvenating the infrastructure, manpower, medical device testing labs and training of regulators.

Reddy informed that, the government has allocated Rs 3,000 crore for the development of the sector and further plans to appoint 300 medical device officers, ten experts from the bio medical, bio materials, plastic engineering and electronic engineering to boost the medical device sector.
