Government to set up panel on common agri-products market

The government will set up a high-power committee to reform internal trade and create a common market for agricultural products, Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution K.V. Thomas said on Thursday.

"We are aware of all the issues and challenges for integrating domestic markets for goods and services. Efforts have to be made to remove all restrictions and barriers for this purpose and tackle the issue in a systematic manner," he said.

Thomas was addressing a seminar on 'Inter-State Trade Barriers-Concerns and Solutions' organised by industry chamber Assocham in New Delhi.

Thomas said the issues involved were complex and included laws, environmental concerns and problems being faced by transporters as they travel through different states and union territories.

He said a draft law on agricultural marketing in consultation with the state governments provided for establishment of private markets/yards and direct purchase centres.
