Sensex closes 214 points up

A benchmark index of Indian equities markets closed 214 points up on July 27. The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 16,860.16 points, closed 16,854.46 points (provisional), 1.29 percent or 214.64 points up from its previous day's close at 16,639.82 points.

The BSE metal index was up by 222.71 points, followed by FMCG index - up by 69.82 points, and IT was up by71.39 points.

The wider 50-scrip S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange closed 1.30 percent up at 5,108.45 points.

The major Sensex gainers were Tata Motors, up by 4.59 percent at INR214.25; Tata Steel, up by 4.05 percent at INR399.70; Sterlite Inds, up by 3.68 percent at INR101.35; HDFC Bank, up by 3.31 percent at INR585.25; and Hindalco Inds, up by 3.20 percent at INR117.55.

The main losers were SBI, down by 3.74 percent at INR1,941.70; BHEL, down by 2.05 percent at INR208; Hero MotoCorp, down by 1.29 percent at INR2,012.90; Cipla, down by 0.58 percent at INR326.25; and Dr Reddy's Lab, down by 0.13 percent at INR1,620.60.
