'Goa's marriage laws should change to promote wedding tourism'

Long-drawn marriage procedures in Goa are a hindrance to promoting the state as a wedding tourism destination, says a tourism official. Speaking on the sidelines of the founding day of the Travel and Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG), its President Francis Braganza told IANS that for wedding tourism to grow in Goa, the marriage registration laws have to change.

Bihar CM demands special status for state

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar hoisted the national flag in Patna on Independence Day, and demanded a special category status for Bihar for its development. "Bihar is developing fast. Last year, our growth rate was more than 16 percent. It is high time the central government should help the state by giving it a special category status," he said.

CM sets target of 11 percent growth for Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu should record a 11 percent economic growth, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa said on August 15, while asking India to protects the Tamils in Sri Lanka. Unfurling the national flag for the 12th time in her political career on Independence Day, the chief minister said: "Tamil Nadu should grow at a rate of 11 percent or more." She said that the state should log a growth of 20 percent over the expected Indian economic growth over the next 10 years.

UP considers alternate energy sources to counter power shortage

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has asked officials to explore non-conventional sources of energy to bridge the demand-supply gap in power. Saying that the non-availability of power was hampering development in many areas in the state, Yadav said that small solar energy and biomass power plants could be set up.

K'taka aims to export software worth INR4 trillion by 2020

With about 40 percent share of software export from India, Karnataka has set an ambitious export target of a whopping INR4 trillion (INR4 lakh crore) by 2020 for the resilient IT services industry in the state. "We propose to increase the annual export of software to about INR4 lakh crore by 2020 from the INR1,35,000 crore in the 2011-12 fiscal, and increase employment opportunities to about two million people from the 8,00,000 at present," Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar said.

Patnaik asks govt to maintain constant fertiliser prices

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has asked the central government to maintain a constant price of fertilisers to protect the farmers from exploitation. "There has been a sudden spurt in the prices of fertilisers, specifically of de-controlled phosphatic and potassic fertilisers," Patnaik said in a letter to Union Chemicals and Fertilisers Minister MK Alagiri.
